If you suffer from migraine symptoms, you likely understand how debilitating a migraine headache can be. While severity can run the gamut from annoying to completely debilitating, one thing is for sure: when you have a migraine, you need relief.
What is a migraine?
A migraine is a specific type of headache that typically occurs just on one side of your head, may “pulsate”, is aggravated by physical activity and may be associated with vomiting or nausea. When suffering from a migraine, you may also be sensitive to lights, sounds and smells. Migraines may pass after a few hours, or may cause pain and discomfort for several days at a time. Clenching your teeth or jaws together is believed to be a trigger for migraine headaches.
Many people who suffer from migraines, tension headaches or other pain have tried treating their pain by visiting their general medical practitioner. Family doctors often treat head pain by prescribing various medications. Unfortunately, medications for head pain only treat the symptoms; they do not address or help deal with the underlying cause of the pain. And, while prescription drugs may provide some temporary comfort, they also carry side effects and may lead to other unwanted health issues.
At Shallowford Dental, we know that your teeth and jaws can play a big part in causing head pain. We see people with migraine and other headache pain every day, and want to help get you the relief you need. In order to do that, we will ask you a series of questions about your headaches to determine frequency and severity and we will talk about what measures (if any) you have already tried to make your headaches more manageable. We will also examine your teeth to assess your condition, which is something your family doctor probably has not done, because they do not specialize in dental health.
If, after that evaluation, we are able to determine that the reason for your migraines is due in full or in part to the way you use your facial muscles, bite, clench or grind your teeth, we can work with you to provide specific, actionable recommendations of how you can get relief. Many of the patients we work with are able to either completely eliminate, or significantly reduce, their reliance on prescription medications after implementing our recommendations.
If the real reason behind your headaches is related to the way you use your facial muscles, jaws or unconsciously clench your teeth, relief from your pain may be just a short phone call and office visit away. If the reason for your migraine headaches was misdiagnosed by your medical doctor, or if you have previously sought answers from your other health care providers but are still suffering from migraines, you owe it to yourself to give Shallowford Dental a chance to help relieve your pain.
In addition to taking other steps to reduce your risk of migraines from clenching your jaw, such as reducing caffeine intake, cutting back on chewing gum and relieving stress through meditation, yoga or other physical activity, Shallowford Dental can help get you the relief you need from migraine pain. You just have to ask us how!!!
