At Shallowford Dental, we understand that chronic pain from TMJ disorder, migraine headaches and other conditions related to poor jaw alignment can negatively impact the quality of your life. That’s why we offer treatment designed to help patients live pain-free lives.
Common Neuromuscular Conditions
Some of the many conditions we treat include:
One of the most common conditions we treat is pain associated with the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ for short. When you have TMJ disorder, everyday activities like chewing can be painful. Fortunately, most patients with TMJ pain do find relief when visiting a qualified dentist.
Migraines and Other Headaches
Migraine pain, or pain from tension headaches can be excruciating. Many patients have found that dental treatments designed to help use facial muscles differently or to stop clenching teeth can provide much-needed relief.
Facial, Neck, Shoulder or Back Pain
Believe it or not, if you suffer from frequent, recurring pain in your face, neck, shoulder or back, the culprit might very well be related to how your jaws align, or your “bite”. Many patients have had success becoming pain-free through non-surgical treatments.
Anyone who suffers from fibromyalgia will tell you that it can cause debilitating muscle pains and other related symptoms, and can affect your entire body. While some people are skeptical about jaw and bite alignment’s role in treating the symptoms, many patients have found relief through non-surgical dental treatments.
Clicking or Popping Jaws
When your jaws are working as they should, you shouldn’t hear anything when you move them. If you do have clicking or popping sounds, it can be an indication that your bite alignment is off, so TMJ treatments may be helpful in eliminating those sounds.
Vertigo, Dizziness, Meniere’s Disease and TMD
Our ears and our jaws are so closely related, that feelings of dizziness and vertigo can have their roots in jaw alignment. When this is the case, non-surgical dental treatments for TMJ disorder can provide patients with much-needed pain relief.
Problems with Ears, including Tinnitus, Stuffiness or Muffled Sounds
As many as ten percent of patients who have ear-related problems, including tinnitus (ringing in the ears), chronic ear congestion or a feeling of stuffiness, or who report that their hearing is muffled, actually do not have problems with their ears. Instead, the problem is often related to the TMJ. When you think about it, this makes sense since your ear canal is so closely connected to your TMJ. For those patients with TMJ-related ear pain, relief may be available through non-surgical dental treatments.
When you have cervical dystonia, your head twists or turns to one side (or forwards or backwards) because your neck muscles contract on their own. While the cause of cervical dystonia isn’t known yet, some patients have found relief through dental treatments that focus on jaw alignment.
If your lower jaw “locks” in either the open or closed position, there may be non-surgical dental treatment options that can help prevent your jaw from locking again in the future.
General anxiety has also been linked to jaw alignment and TMJ, and some patients have found that after undergoing jaw alignment treatments, their symptoms of anxiety are reduced or even eliminated.
