What is TMJ/TMD?
Your TMJ, which stands for “temporomandibular joint” is the connecting joint between your jawbone and your skull, and you have two of them – one on each side of your face. You use your TMJ every day when you talk, chew, swallow or yawn.
When someone refers to TMJ pain, they likely have a TMJ disorder (often referred to as TMD) which can make everyday actions, such as chewing, painful. They may be experiencing popping, tenderness, clicking, or difficulty moving their lower jaw back and forth. Some patients experience pain in and around their ears, headaches and neck aches, and sensitive teeth as a result of TMJ.
(YES!! Even Migraine Headaches!!)
Women are more than twice as likely as men to experience TMJ pain, although it can affect anyone.
What causes TMJ pain?
There does not seem to be one distinct reason people have TMJ pain. People with TMJ disorders may have a genetic predisposition for it, may have arthritis in their joints, or may have had an injury or accident that resulted in TMJ pain. For others, their teeth or jaws may not align properly due to old dental restorations or orthodontic treatment. Still others may find themselves in pain because they clench their jaws or grind their teeth when under stress (whether consciously or not.) Even things like poor posture or excessive gum-chewing can cause TMJ pain.

We will also ask you questions about you, have been trying to manage the pain on your own, so we can help you determine the best path to get rid of your jaw pain.
